@peleihno not necessarily, you load the page once and then get updated by your peers more or less directly. So even if the main site is having problems, the chat can still technically keep going. I've seen this in action myself on another site, the site was down for 2 hours while it was being upgraded to a better server and yet the chatbox kept going as if nothing had happened. There was only a lack of people joining, but those who were already in the chatbox didn't have any problems the whole time.
