one of the problem im havin is that when i tried to draw big i ended up drawing pretty small =]

Ah, i know that problem.
Well i used to be like that ^^; my art teachers were like
"nag, nag you must draw big and show the details"

It's just matter of confidence in your skill in drawing and practice drawing big on A4 paper, when you get used to it go on to A3.
After that you can be a mad cow like me and draw on your walls and paint them in xD ( if you want )

Is my student liking my advice ? =P

Well to sort that out you have to do some reference work, like :
+ searching patterns, to give you ideas if you ever what to add patterns to clothing.
+ Actual designs from different culture's, to help you get a feel for what's out there and help you develope your own style in clothes for your drawings.
+ Look at material, to help you add more a more in depth feel.
+ Hair and how it sways and breaks up.
+ Concentrate a little of the movement in the drawing, like hair, clothing and position.

( i might have missed abit more, but that's all i could think of )

Thing is with that . . .
+ You can copy the original too much, i was trying to help my friend but he ended up just imitating my style.
+ you might get carried awayand lose your own feel of drawing from your mind, plus your original style.

It's ok to get ideas by looking at other people's drawings it's not ok, when you start to copying too much of their idea's ^^

Nowadays i just have a biro or pencil and my scrap book, my good manga/anything book is usually lying in my schoolbag waiting to be drawn in. ^^;

Why wouldn't i =P
Your making me think of advice and i just woke up afew minutes ago xD
Anyway to help you in shading you should:
+ I like to use 2B pencils for that, i know it's meant for sketching but i use HB for sketching. (coz i'm cool . . . joke, just my style )
+ Get a half decent rubber/eraser, it's amazing what a good one can do.
+ you could use your finger to smudge, makes it either smooth or shiney.
+ Know your pencil <---- pretty important
( just don't get too carried away and start calling it sakura or something . . . )
+ Look at lighting abit to see where all the shades would be.

hmm, i think that's it. I might say more things in the future ^^

( if that advice bit for art is created i should add a thread there, like previous advice xD )
